Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, and when there is not enough room for them they can become impacted, painful or a source of repeated infection. At Smile Avenue Dentistry in North York, wisdom teeth are assessed with an examination and X-rays, and removal is recommended only when a tooth is causing problems or is likely to. To book an assessment, call (416) 250-5354.

Wisdom teeth should come out when they cause — or are likely to cause — problems.
Signs it may be time for wisdom teeth to come out:
Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted and cleanable do NOT automatically need removal — assessment decides.
Wisdom teeth removal starts with an assessment, including an examination and X-rays to check the position of the tooth and the surrounding bone. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area.
A simple removal is used when the tooth has fully erupted and can be lifted out. A surgical removal is used for impacted teeth, where a small cut in the gum may be needed to reach the tooth. Stitches are used when needed to close the area. After removal, gauze is placed over the socket and you will receive written aftercare instructions.
If a wisdom tooth is the source of an emergency — severe pain or swelling — please see our dental emergency care in North York. Same-day appointments are available when the clinic is open (Monday–Friday 9–7, Sunday 9–7; closed Saturday) — call (416) 250-5354 to confirm.
For other teeth that need to be removed, see our tooth extraction page.

Recovery after wisdom teeth removal is usually straightforward. The first 24–48 hours matter most: rest, protect the blood clot, and stick to soft foods. Swelling typically peaks around day two or three and settles over the first week.
Contact the clinic if pain increases after day three, if you develop a fever, or if swelling worsens instead of improving.
Our detailed aftercare guide walks through day-by-day care after a wisdom tooth extraction.
No. Teeth that are healthy, fully erupted, biting properly and can be kept clean can often stay. Removal is recommended when a tooth is impacted, infected, damaging its neighbour or cannot be cleaned.
Assessment usually happens in the late teens or early twenties, when the roots are still developing, but removal can be done at any age when a tooth causes problems.
Most people return to light routines within a few days; swelling typically peaks around day two or three and settles over the first week. The aftercare guide linked above covers the day-by-day picture.
A tooth that cannot fully erupt because of its angle or a lack of space. Impacted teeth can trap bacteria around the gum flap and are a common reason for removal.
Many patients take one to three days of rest, depending on how many teeth were removed and whether the removal was surgical. The team will advise based on your case.
Coverage depends on the individual plan and, for the CDCP, on the member’s eligibility and the plan’s rules. The clinic accepts CDCP patients and many major insurance plans, and the team can check what applies to you before treatment.
