Snoring & Sleep Apnea

What Is Sleep Apnea and Snoring?

Snoring happens when airflow becomes partially blocked during sleep and causes the tissues in the throat to vibrate. Sleep apnea is a more serious sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the airway collapses during sleep. Snoring is sometimes harmless, but it can also be a warning sign of sleep apnea. The difference is that sleep apnea interrupts oxygen flow and puts stress on the body over time. Left untreated, it is linked to high blood pressure, heart problems, chronic fatigue, and difficulty concentrating during the day.

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Many people do not realize they have sleep apnea until a partner or family member notices the symptoms. Here are some common signs to watch for:

Loud or frequent snoring
Gasping, choking, or pauses in breathing during sleep
Feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep
Morning headaches
Dry mouth or sore throat after waking up
Difficulty concentrating during the day
Irritability or mood changes caused by poor sleep
Sleep screening

How we screen for sleep-related breathing problems

We screen you, look at your airway and bite, and point you to the right place. Four steps, in this order.

What a dentist can and cannot do

A dentist does not diagnose sleep apnea. That diagnosis comes from a physician, usually after a sleep study. If you already have a diagnosis, we can build the appliance.

Step 01

Initial consultation

We start with your sleep habits, your symptoms, your medical history, and what a bad night actually looks like for you. If your partner has noticed something, bring them or bring what they told you.

Step 02

Airway and oral examination

We examine your airway, throat, tongue position, jaw, and bite for the physical factors that narrow the airway during sleep. We also look for worn teeth, since grinding and sleep-disordered breathing often show up together.

Step 03

Sleep study referral

If the screening points toward obstructive sleep apnea, we refer you for a sleep study. That may be a home sleep test or an overnight evaluation. A physician reads the results and makes the diagnosis, not us.

Step 04

Review and treatment planning

Once you have a diagnosis and your physician has recommended an oral appliance, we go through the options with you and build the device that fits your bite.

Oral Appliance Therapy for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Oral appliance therapy is a comfortable and non-surgical treatment option that keeps the airway open during sleep. These appliances are worn like a mouthguard and can reduce airway blockage by adjusting the position of the jaw or tongue. Oral appliance therapy is prescribed by a physician. We build and fit the appliance once that recommendation is in place.

Custom-Made Oral Appliances

Every appliance we provide is built for your mouth from digital scans or impressions. A fit made for your own bite and jaw position is more comfortable to sleep in, and it works better. Patients who find the appliance comfortable tend to wear it every night, which is what makes the treatment work. A properly fitted appliance also puts less pressure on the teeth and jaw.

Snoring Devices

Snoring devices improve airflow by repositioning the jaw or tongue during sleep, which stops the soft tissues in the throat from collapsing and vibrating. These are usually recommended for patients with primary snoring or mild airway obstruction. Many patients report quieter nights and better rest, for themselves and for whoever sleeps next to them.

Sleep Apnea Devices

Sleep apnea devices, often called mandibular advancement devices, move the lower jaw slightly forward to maintain an open airway and prevent airway collapse throughout the night. This way, they can reduce breathing interruptions and improve oxygen flow during sleep.

They are commonly used for patients with obstructive sleep apnea who want an alternative to CPAP therapy or have difficulty tolerating a CPAP machine.

CPAP vs Oral Appliance: Which Is Right for You?

Feature CPAP Machine Oral Appliance
Comfort May feel bulky for some patients Small and more comfortable for many users
Portability Larger and less travel-friendly Compact and easy to travel with
Noise Produces machine noise during sleep Quiet and discreet
Ease of Use Requires mask, tubing, and setup Simple to wear and maintain

What Our Patients Are Saying

FAQs

Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, is a condition where the airway becomes blocked repeatedly during sleep. These blockages reduce airflow and temporarily interrupt breathing, often causing loud snoring, choking sounds, or disrupted sleep throughout the night.

Snoring and sleep apnea can develop for several reasons, including relaxed throat muscles, airway shape, excess weight, nasal congestion, jaw positioning, or enlarged tissues in the throat. Certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking or alcohol use before bedtime, may also increase the risk.

Untreated sleep apnea is associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, chronic fatigue, memory problems, and daytime drowsiness. Poor sleep also takes a toll on mood and concentration.
