At Home Dental Care

Great oral health starts at home. Between your visits to Smile Avenue Dentistry, these simple daily habits will help protect your smile and keep your teeth and gums healthy for life.

Brushing & Flossing

  • Brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months
  • Floss once daily to clean between teeth
  • Consider an electric toothbrush for better plaque removal

Diet & Nutrition

  • Limit sugary snacks and acidic drinks
Drink plenty of water, especially fluoridated tap water
  • Eat calcium-rich foods like dairy, leafy greens, and almonds
  • Chew sugar-free gum after meals to neutralize acids
  • Avoid snacking frequently between meals

Kids' Oral Care

  • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears
  • Use a rice-grain amount of toothpaste for under-3s
  • Use a pea-sized amount from age 3 onward
  • Supervise brushing until around age 7–8
  • Bring your child for their first dental visit by age 1

Post-Surgical Care

At Smile Avenue Dentistry, we want your recovery to be as smooth and comfortable as possible. Whether you have recently had a tooth extraction, root canal, dental implant, crown, bridge, or filling, following the right aftercare steps will help you heal faster and avoid complications.

Diet

Stick to soft foods for the first 48 hours and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Avoid the following until you have healed:

  • Hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
  • Raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, and popcorn
  • Sugary or starchy snacks that can increase the risk of decay

Some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal and should improve within 24 to 48 hours.

Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen work best when taken before the discomfort becomes severe. Never exceed the recommended dose.
To protect the healing area, avoid:

  • Using straws or spitting forcefully
  • Vigorous rinsing
  • Smoking

Proper Care

Keep the area clean to support recovery. Rinse with warm saltwater (½ tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water) two to three times a day, especially after meals. Brush gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush and avoid flossing near the treated area until your gums have recovered.
If you were prescribed antibiotics or a special rinse, complete the full course as directed.
