When Should You Call an Emergency Dentist?

Call us promptly if you have severe or persistent tooth pain, facial or gum swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, dental bleeding that will not stop, or a lost filling or crown causing pain. We will ask about your symptoms and help arrange the earliest appropriate appointment.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for trouble breathing or swallowing, loss of consciousness, a suspected broken jaw or serious head or facial injury, severe bleeding that will not stop, or rapidly worsening swelling of the face or neck.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

A dental abscess may cause persistent pain, swelling, tenderness, fever or a bad taste in the mouth. Contact us promptly for an examination. Treatment depends on the cause and may include drainage, root canal therapy or extraction.

A broken or chipped tooth may expose sensitive inner layers or create a sharp edge. Call us for an assessment. Treatment may include a filling, crown, root canal therapy or extraction, depending on the damage.

Pain Management

Severe or Persistent Toothache

Tooth pain can result from decay, a crack, infection or another dental problem. Contact us if the pain is severe, persists or is accompanied by swelling. The dentist will examine the tooth and recommend appropriate care.

Lost Filling Replacement

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown can leave the tooth sensitive and vulnerable to further damage. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side and call us to arrange an assessment.

Emergency Root Canal Treatment

Severe pain, lingering sensitivity or swelling may indicate inflammation or infection inside a tooth. If root canal therapy is appropriate, it may help remove the infection and preserve the tooth.

Bleeding Treatment

Dental Bleeding or Mouth Injury

Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. Call us if bleeding persists or follows a dental injury. Go to the nearest emergency department if severe bleeding will not stop or the injury involves the head, face or jaw.

Emergency Tooth Extraction

A severely damaged or infected tooth may need to be removed when it cannot be repaired. The dentist will examine the tooth, discuss available options and recommend extraction only when clinically appropriate.

Veneers

Lost or Damaged Dental Veneer

A chipped or detached veneer is not always a dental emergency, but pain, a sharp edge or damage to the underlying tooth should be assessed promptly. Keep the veneer if it comes off and contact the clinic for advice.

Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If it is easy and safe, place it back in the socket; otherwise, keep it in cold milk and seek dental care immediately. Never reinsert a baby tooth.

What to Expect at an Emergency Dental Appointment

Call (647) 250-0510 before coming in. Tell us what happened, when the symptoms began, and whether you have swelling, bleeding, fever or a dental injury. We will help arrange the earliest appropriate appointment.

Pain Relief

The dentist will examine the affected area and ask about your symptoms and health history. X-rays may be recommended when needed to help identify the cause and determine appropriate treatment options.

Treatment

Depending on the findings, care may include a filling, crown repair, drainage, root canal therapy, extraction or temporary stabilization. We will explain the recommended care and applicable fees before treatment begins.

Follow-up care

We will provide aftercare instructions and let you know whether a follow-up appointment is needed. Contact the clinic if your symptoms worsen or new concerns develop after the visit.

Dental Emergency First Aid Before You Arrive

If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If it is easy and safe, place it back in the socket; otherwise, keep it in cold milk and seek dental care immediately. Never reinsert a baby tooth.

For a broken or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth gently with water. If there is swelling, place a cold compress against the outside of your cheek. Bring any broken pieces with you if they can be found safely.

For facial or gum swelling or a suspected dental abscess, do not try to puncture or drain the area yourself. Call the clinic promptly. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly worsening swelling of the face or neck, severe bleeding that will not stop, or a serious head, face or jaw injury.
