Preparing a tooth for a veneer is a precise step that affects how the final result looks and fits. The amount of preparation depends on the type of veneer you choose. Porcelain veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel removed from the front of the tooth, often around 0.5 millimetres, which creates room for the veneer to sit flush against the tooth without looking bulky. Lumineers and some composite veneers need little or no enamel removal, so they are a more conservative option.
