How Fluoride Works

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps rebuild weakened tooth enamel through a process called remineralization. When you eat sugars and starches, bacteria produce acids that wear down minerals from your teeth. Fluoride steps in to replace those lost minerals and makes your teeth more resistant to future acid attacks. It can even reverse the very early stages of tooth decay before a cavity fully forms.

Types of Fluoride Treatments We Offer

We provide professional fluoride options that are much more concentrated than what you find in over-the-counter toothpaste or mouthwash:

Fluoride Varnish

A highly concentrated gel that is brushed onto the tooth surface. It sets quickly and stays in contact with the teeth for several hours.

Fluoride Foam or Gel

These are applied using a specialized tray that you wear for a few minutes during your appointment.

Who Can Benefit from Fluoride Treatment?

While fluoride is often associated with children, it is beneficial for patients of all ages. It is particularly helpful for:
Individuals with a history of frequent cavities.
Patients with receding gums or exposed roots.
Those experiencing dry mouth (xerostomia), which reduces the mouth's natural ability to wash away acids.
People with orthodontic braces, crowns, or bridges that make cleaning difficult.

Fluoride Treatment Process

The process is straightforward and is typically completed at the end of your regular cleaning:

Preparation

We ensure your teeth are clean and dry so the fluoride can adhere properly.

Application

The fluoride is applied directly to your teeth using a small brush or a tray.

Setting

The treatment takes only a minute or two to apply. Once finished, the fluoride remains on your teeth to be absorbed by the enamel.

How Much Fluoride Is Enough?

Finding the right balance is key to oral health. Most people receive a baseline of fluoride through fluoridated tap water and daily brushing. However, a professional application at our North York office provides a targeted, high-dose concentration that offers longer-term protection. It’s important to note that we assess your specific risk factors to determine the appropriate frequency for your treatments.

FAQs

Yes. Professional fluoride treatments are a safe and standard part of preventive dentistry. When administered by dental professionals, the amount used is controlled to provide maximum benefit without risk.

Fluoride is vital for children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years, as this is when their permanent teeth are developing. However, adults also benefit from fluoride to prevent new decay.

Fluoride is safe when used as directed. Like many vitamins and minerals, it is only harmful if ingested in extremely large quantities. The topical application used in a dental office is not meant to be swallowed and is completely safe.

For most patients, a treatment every 6 to 12 months during a routine check-up is sufficient. If you are at a higher risk for cavities, we may recommend more frequent applications.

True fluoride allergies are rare. If you have sensitivities to flavorings or specific ingredients in the varnish, please let us know so we can select the best option for you.

It works in two ways: it stops bacteria from producing acid and it strengthens the tooth structure itself, so it makes it harder for decay to start.

We usually recommend waiting at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking to allow the fluoride to be fully absorbed by the enamel. For certain varnishes, you may eat right away but should avoid hot liquids or crunchy foods for several hours.
