Knocked out teeth? Here's what to do in this emergency

If an adult (permanent) tooth has been knocked out, follow these steps immediately before heading to our office:

  • Pick it up by the crown: Only touch the top part of the tooth. Never touch the root, since this can damage the delicate cells needed for replantation
  • Rinse gently: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with cool water for a few seconds. Do not use soap, do not scrub it, and do not wrap it in a tissue. Dr. Firouzeh Zolfagharirad advises: “Do NOT scrub the root. Even mild soap can kill the cells needed for reattachment.”
  • Reposition the tooth: If possible, gently slide the tooth back into its original socket. Hold it in place by biting down softly on some clean gauze.
  • Keep it moist: If you cannot put it back in the socket, put it in a small container of cold milk. Milk is better than water because it has a specific balance of proteins that keeps the root cells alive. If milk is not available, you can consider a saline solution.
Go to the dentist immediately: Don’t forget that time is the most critical factor for a successful reimplantation. So, don’t waste it.

Cavities in Baby Teeth

Pediatric Care: Is it a Baby Tooth?

If your child knocks out a tooth, the first thing to check is whether it is a primary baby tooth or a permanent one. Never try to reinsert a baby tooth. Doing so can accidentally damage the permanent adult tooth that is still growing underneath the gums.
Even though we do not put the tooth back, you should still bring your child. Our experienced North York pediatric dentists will assess the injury and recommend the safest treatment path.

Act Quickly: Why the First 30 Minutes Matter

We often refer to the first hour after an injury as the golden hour. During this time, the cells on the tooth root have the highest chance of surviving. The ligaments that connect the tooth to the bone begin to die quickly if exposed to air. This is why keeping the tooth moist and protected is useful.

Once the tooth is back in its socket, we typically use a technique called splinting. This involves joining the knocked-out tooth to the healthy ones next to it using a thin wire or resin. This keeps the tooth stable while the bone and ligaments heal around it.
At Smile Avenue Dentistry, we offer emergency care for exactly these situations. You will head home with your knocked-out tooth treated.
